Conference Keynote Speakers: Why Timing Matters

Keynote SpeakerWhen scheduling a conference or an event, you may want to have a keynote speaker. A keynote speaker can set the tone of your event – in fact, that is what they are there for.  The name keynote speaker comes from the idea of a key note in music, which sets the tone for an a capella song. In much the same way, a keynote speaker can set either a positive tone for your event, if the speaker is a good one, or a negative tone, if the speaker does not quite work out.

The Hound is pleased to provide some suggestions from our colleagues (and guest contributor Lisa  Swan) at The Avant -Guide Institute:

Timing is a huge part of finding a good keynote speaker. Here are some of the things you need to consider when it comes to timing:

Scheduling the keynote speaker

One of the most important things to do with timing when it comes to keynote speakers is making sure that the speaker is available for the time of your event. If you have a chance at getting a superstar speaker, you may have to literally plan your event around that speaker, scheduling your convention or gathering, or the timing of the speaker, around that person’s schedule.

In other cases, you may have a variety of options for your keynote speaker, but you have to make sure that they are available in the time frame you need them. When it comes to two or three potential keynote speakers which may have similar appeal, the availability of the speaker could be the deciding factor on who you pick.

You may need to start looking for a speaker a year ahead of your event, or even longer, if you are trying to get A-list type talent. In other cases, you may not need that long of a lead time for hiring a speaker. It really depends upon your individual situation.

Scheduling the keynote speaker’s address is important

You want to make sure that your keynote speaker gets sufficient billing. Keep in mind that a keynote address does not have to be the first speech at a convention or event – it may be at lunch on the first day, or it might even be the second day of the event. The important thing, though, is that the keynote speaker talks at a time in which everybody will be paying attention. You don’t want to have him or her speak at 8 a.m. in the morning if most people are still shuffling in and getting coffee. That will be a waste of all the work you did to get your speaker.

Make sure the keynote speaker has good timing and won’t put your audience to sleep

It is important, of course, that your keynote speaker has good timing, and a professional way of speaking that will appeal to your audience. As previously noted, a boring speaker can put a damper on your whole event. So make sure that you do your homework, and find an exciting keynote speaker that can energize and inspire your audience.
